Writing Skills 2 - It’s all about a box!

Okay, let’s get down to writing with empathy. Do you have a box handy? Or something similar? If you haven’t anything like that available it doesn’t matter right now. You can always try this out afterwards. Here we go …

You are going to promote a box, using tantalising text, and you are going to get your customers to buy this box because this particular box is the very thing they need right now!

Look at the box:

• What do you like about it (apart from the fact it is going to make you money)?
• How is it structured?
• Does it look strong?
• Does it feel strong?
• Does it feel chunky?
• Is it stapled or taped? What are the advantages of this?
• Is it a big box or a small box?
• What color is it?
• What can you put in this box?
• How much can you get in this box?
• Is it waterproof?
• Is it going to be heavy to carry and, if so, how will you get around that?
• Is the box guaranteed? For how long? That’s good, isn’t it?
• Where is the box going to fit? do you have a space for it?
• Will you be able to use the box for something else after it’s initial use?

And I’m sure you will come up with your own questions and answers about the box

Ok, now what thoughts come to your mind when you look at the box?

• “It’s as strong as a house.”
• “Just look at that sturdy design.”
• The bottom will never fall out of that.”
• “Wow! I can get so much in that box!”
• “Those sides are nice and chunky. That’s a good sign that the box is strong.”
• “It’s a bit big. Where on earth can I put it?”
• “That will fit nicely under the shelf in the garage.”
• “I know just the place for that box.”
• “I can use that box for …. afterwards.”

Yeah, I know. This is only a box. But if you can make good selling text for that box, then I reckon you can sell a whole heap of things.

A note on keywords:

What keywords do you thnk people will use when they look on the net for boxes? Go and have a look. One of the links you can use for free is Wordtracker. Put in the word ‘box’ (boxes, boxes for sale, etc) and see what it gives you. It could just give you some ideas.

A Writing Project You Can Set Yourself:

Yes, you’ve guessed it! Write some advertising text about a box (or another inanimate object along similar lines). Use keywords, but fit them into your text with skill. And give the piece a great title too.

Just remember, this is all about writing with empathy.
